Tablet setup

In this page, you will learn how to perform the basic setup of android devices. Note that this procedure is based on a Lenovo tablet. Changes occur when configuring tablets from other brands.

You will need the following material:

• An Android tablet (runnin Android version 9 or 10)
• A Wi-Fi with internet connection
• An IT coordinator with a master tablet to allow parental control. Remember to never share the master tablet's credentials!

First, setup Android. If you own a Lenovo, follow these steps: Android Setup on Lenovo tablet. If you have a Samsung tablet, make sure to follow this procedure: Android Setup on Samsung tablet

If you own a Lenovo Tablet, follow these steps to setup your tablet:

1. Charge the tablet’s battery until it reaches 100%
2. Choose English and press Start
3. Agree to the license agreement.
4. Skip the Wi-Fi connection for now (confirm it).
5. Setup date and time.
6. Accept the terms.
7. Skip the tablet locking process (Not Now & Skip Anyway)
8. Skip face recognition.
9. Skip Lenovo ID.
10. Accept user experience program.
11. Choose the classic mode for the navigation method.
12. You should now have access to Android.
13. Set screen timeout to 30min.

If you own an Android Tablet, follow these steps to setup your tablet:

1. Charge the tablet’s battery until it reaches 100%.
2. Choose English and press Start.
3. Agree to the license agreement.
4. Skip the Wi-Fi connection for now (confirm it).
5. Setup date and time.
6. Accept the required terms, do not accept terms that are optional.
7. Skip Samsung account creation.
8. Skip security settings such as locking process.
9. You should now have access to Android.
10. Set screen timeout to 30min: Open the Settings app, navigate to Display and set Screen timeout to 30 minutes.
11. De-activate auto-correct: In Settings > General management, select Samsung keyboard and take off Predictive text.

To check if the MAC address is set for the Dynamic Study network, follow this procedure:

1. Open Settings from the main app list.
2. Click on Connections, then select Wi-Fi.
3. Select your Wi-Fi, generally Dynamic Study.
4. Find and select Advanced.
5. Look at MAC address type:
   • If it is set to Tablet MAC, leave it and exit.
   • If it is set to Randomised MAC, change to Tablet MAC.

1. You will need to install the medAL-reader application.
2. This is a non-exhaustive list of applications you may need to install, but which are not directly related to the medAL-suite:
   • Respiratory Rate
   • ODK Collect
   • REDCap Mobile App
   • QR and Barcode Scanner

To setup the app used in the field by health care providers, follow this procedure:

1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and connect to the following Wi-Fi network:
   ssid: health_facility_dynamic
   password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
2. Go to the Play Store.
3. Sign in with the following account:
   email: dynamic.study.tz@gmail.com
   password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
4. Agree to the terms.
5. Make sure to NOT backup the device to Google Drive.
6. Search for the medAL-reader app from Unisanté.
7. Install the app and open it.
8. On the login page, enter the following credentials:
   email: dynamic.study.tz@gmail.com
   password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
9. Click on Login.
10. Accept all permissions it may request.

To install the Respiratory Rate application, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Play Store.
2. Search for the RRate app from PART BC Children's and install it.
3. Accept any permission it may request.

To install the ODK Collect application, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Play Store.
2. Search for the ODK Collect app from ODK and install it.
3. Accept any permission it may request.

To install the REDCap Mobile application, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Play Store.
2. Search for the REDCap Mobile App app from The REDCap Team at Vanderbilt and install it.
3. Accept any permission it may request.

To install the QR and Barcode Scanner application, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Play Store.
2. Search for the QR and Barcode Scanner app from Gamma Play and install it.
3. Accept any permission it may request.

To setup the parental control on your tablet, follow this procedure:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Search Parental control in the search bar.
3. Click on Digital Wellness & Parental control
4. Follow the steps to enable parental control. You must be able to communicate with your local IT Coordinator.

As an IT Coordinator, follow this procedure to update apps management from the master tablet:

1. Open Family link app.
2. Click on View > Manage Settings > Android apps > Any apps and turn on Allow app.
3. Under Permissions, allow the following applications:
   1. medAL-reader
   2. RRate
   3. ODK Collect
   4. REDCap Mobile App
   5. QR and Barcode Scanner
   6. Camera
   7. Play Store
   8. Calculator
   9. Office Mobile
   10. PDF Reader
   11. Google Calendar
