Internet setup

Purpose and scope

This page describes the procedures used to successfully install the local router, the mobile hotspot and secure the network.

Prerequisite

None

Material

You will need the following material:

  • A router
  • A SIM card
  • A smartphone
  • A mobile hotspot (if no internet access on health facility's site)

Router and Internet Setup

Before starting, check that you can access the internet on your health facility's site. If this is the case, follow the following procedure: Local Router Setup (Online Facilities).
Otherwise, if you need a mobile hotspot, follow a different approach: Local Router and Smartphone Hotspot Setup (Offline Facilities)

Local Router Setup (Online Facilities)

In this section, we will setup a single router connected to the internet using a SIM card. This router will give internet access to the medAL-hub and/or tablets. Follow this procedure:

  1. Check the sim card’s phone number:
    1. Insert it in a phone.
    2. For VODACOM, call *106#.
    3. Select 1.
    4. Write it down.
  2. Insert the sim card in the router.
  3. Turn on the router.
  4. Connect your computer to the router (using an ethernet cable or Wi-Fi).
  5. Identify the router IP address. If you are on Windows, run the command:
    ipconfig

And look for the Default Gateway IP address.

  6. Write the IP address in the web browser url space and press Enter.
  7. Enter the default admin credentials (username should be admin and password should either be password or empty string).
  8. Change the router admin password. Strong password is highly recommended:
    username: admin
password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
  9. Update the wireless ssid and its password to:
    ssid: health_facility_dynamic
password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
  10. Save the configuration.
  11. Buy the internet bundle. This can be done by inserting the SIM card into a smartphone, and adding funds to the SIM card.
  12. Connect to this new network and check that you have access to the internet:
    ping google.com

Local Router and Smartphone Hotspot Setup (Offline Facilities)

In this section, we will setup a first router to offer a local network on site. This will allow the hub and tablets to communicate to each other. A second mobile hotspot connected to the internet will also be available to export data regularly. To configure the local router, follow this procedure:

  1. Turn on the router.
  2. Connect your computer to the router (using an ethernet cable or Wi-Fi).
  3. Identify the router IP address. If you are on Windows, run the command:
    ipconfig

And look for the Default Gateway IP address.

  4. Write the IP address in the web browser url space and press Enter.
  5. Enter the default admin credentials (username should be admin and password should either be password or empty string).
  6. Change the router admin password. Strong password is highly recommended:
    username: admin
password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
  7. Update the wireless ssid and password to:
    ssid: health_facility_dynamic
password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
  8. Save the configuration.

Finally, make sure you own a hotspot which connects to the internet.

  1. Change the wireless ssid and password to:
    ssid: mobile_dynamic
password: Check with an administrator to have access to the password.
  2. Connect to this new network and check that you have access to the internet (before testing, make sure that you are in a propitious location where your hotspot can have mobile network access).
